Bass Fishing Habits

Bass are pretty predictable fish. If you learn their habits, you go a long ways towards making your next bass fishing outing successful.

Generally the largemouth bass will avoid bottom areas of lakes and other waters which are overly muddy or layered with silt. But this fish is also very tolerant, and if muddy water is unavoidable from time to time, it will make do.It will probe and hide around logs, rocks, and other forms of protective cover.

Smallmouth bass fishing is generally better in the early spring than largemouth fishing, as smallmouths tend to be more active in cold water. Start to look for them when the water temperature is in the mid-40s.

Fish the first deep water associated with a large gravel or mud flat. The smallmouths might be 20 or 30 feet deep or more on this deep drop-off, waiting for the temperature to rise slightly so they can move up and spawn. Once the water hits the mid-50s, the bigger smallmouth bass will begin move in onto the shallow flats to spawn and will generally be found in the 10-25 foot range.

You can see that learning the habits of bass will aid you when you head out on your next fishing trip.
